BRASS AT THE GUILD -
PRESTON 10th FEB 2002
The weather once again was fine although
it was a typical breezy February Day. Fair play to the band there were
no complaints at our early start and equally early rehearsal in Preston.
Such is the joy of being in the third section !!. But we were later to
be rewarded with a 3rd prize which made it all worth while.

WELSH REGIONAL
CHAMPIONSHIPS 2004 13th MARCH 2004
The band had yet another early start in
Swansea. Oh the joy of being in the 3rd Section!!. We had a rehearsal at
9.a.m. To say that it went badly was an understatement. It ended with MD
Gareth Thomas giving the band the biggest rollicking I have ever heard.
To everyone's surprise it did the trick. The band went on stage in a
determined mood and delivered the goods with a performance that merited
2nd place and a chance to go to the Finals in Harrogate after a gap of
13 years.
Go forward to
represent Wales in the 3rd Section finals at Harrogate and promoted to
the 2nd Section as from 1/1/05

BRIGHOUSE MARCH &
HYMN TUNE CONTEST 5th ANNUAL EVENT 4th JULY 2004
The weather was brilliant again for one
of the major event's in Yorkshire's brass band calendar. Held in
Thornton Square, Brighouse, the recod entry of 27 bands gave the large
audience a fantastic days music by bands from all over the country
ranging from Youth section up to Championship Section. The adjudicators
Alan Lawton and Stan Lippeatt were extremely pleased at the high
standard achieved throughout the day. Allan Holdsworth and Steven
Thornton also officiated with extra awards in the contest and Fred
Etherington was the MC for the event.
Hepworth (Persimmom Homes) Band,
conducted by Mark Bentham, made it a remarkable four times in succession
as overall winners, this backing up their sensational Whit-Friday
achievements, a few weeks ago. It was good to see the Danish Band,
Silkborg Blaeserne in Brighouse, taking away the best Deportment and a
special prize also. Over £1,000 in prize money was won and a record
amount will be donated to the Mayor's chosen charity.

Confident start made, fast tempo.
Just the odd untidy moment. Good dynamic contrasts. Balance is not
always good, top heavy. Why are you getting faster?
Trio Quite a few untidy moments and cornets are over blowing. Bottom end
are very tidy, well played trombone section.
D.C. same problems tempo is too fast and this compounds the technical
problems and leads to untidyness.

A rather uncertain start with some poor tuning in the
upper Cornets.
This is a good tempo and you move nicely into 27 your playing has
settled down.
Nice close (apart from the tuning)
Overall a fair performance that improved as it went along, just work
more on your tuning/intonation.
Thank You
Alan Lawton

3rd SECTION NATIONAL
FINALS at HARROGATE 12th SEPTEMBER 2004
The weather was wet and blustery for
this major event in the Bandsman's calendar. Held in the International
Conference Centre , Harrogate, the entry of 19 bands gave the large
audience a fantastic days music by bands from all over the country. The
band set off for Harrogate at 5am on the morning of the contest,
resplendent in their new walking out jackets provided by our hard
working fundraising group, arriving at 7.20am for their morning
rehearsal at a local school. After a warming "cuppa" the band got down
to the serious business in hand.
Unfortunately as is so often the case
with our band the best performance was left in the bandroom. After a
shaky start the band started to get to grips with the piece. It makes
you wonder where we would have come if we had played like we did in the
Salvation Army Hall on the Friday Night !! we shall never know alas.
Adjudicators John Maines and Derek Broadbent were extremely pleased at
the high standard achieved throughout the day.
Hoover (Bolton) Band, conducted by Chris
Wormwald, made it into first spot with 187 Points. St Dennis from
Cornwall were second with 185 points and Lockwood placed third with 184
points.

Unlucky cornet (maybe two players
next time) ! Some good sounds and balance to B but tuning then is
a problem . Watch note lengths in pp figures otherwise some good work to
"Lumbering". Good detail is found D is generally good first the
odd spot of tuning at phrase endings. F Melody line good. Rhythms
balance not always consistent. Nice cantabile feel and a good contrast
into G. Well done euph. H is well played perhaps a little
more breadth to the notes ? I is good. Again watch note lengths
in accented minims. J Could be more dramatic ( heavey and
forte!). L is better. Balance in troms needs attention. Good to
M. Cornets at M play well. Flug plays well after a shaky
start. Tuning is poor to "slower". N same again cornet !
otherwise some good playing produces a good sound to O. Good
majestic feel at O but be careful a suspicion of overblowing is
creeping in. Otherwise some good work noted.
Thanks

Unlucky in the opening. Then you settle down. Watch
the balance please - build to A has good effect - Watch the
tuning in the approach to B and onwards !. Cornet duo tastefully
done - some pleasing moments arise. The loss of clarity in accomps is
noted. Low Cornetsto close - fair. Lumbering - opens well with good
detail. Sops C# accented quavers ff !!!! ? - Some inpact is lost in this
section. E opens well F in good style. Watch the
intonation flug. Cantabile - moves well - stirring. A good build G
Euph lacks some detail H gets a bit spacious. Then is it is
nicely put together to I - don't "Peak" at the ? please - again
it is all a bit spacious. J - lacks style FASTER gets a bit
untidy K is better, but watch the general balance please l
- lower lines why > > > ? upper line - I'd like broader quavers please.
Slower.. Accomps could be neater. M quite stylish - flug a shade
liquid - fair accomps - but incompatible to lower Balance ! N
this not secure - and tuning problems are in evidence. The impact is
lost in the build up to O - This lacks a bit of Majesty. and poor
tuning is heard in many places. It builds well in the close - if a
little spacious. Timp could be more domineering. Fair to close . Thank
You very much. Some promising moments - but uncomfortable ones also.

3rd SECTION North Wales Brass Band
Championships at RHYL Town Hall 20th November 2004
The weather was dry but very very cold for this major
event in every North Wales's Bandsman's calendar. Held in Rhyl Town
Hall, Rhyl, the entry of 9 Senior bands and 7 Youth/Junior bands gave
the large audience a fantastic days music by bands from all over the
North of the country. The band set off for Rhyl in cars on the morning
of the contest, resplendent in their new walking out jackets provided by
our hard working fundraising group, arriving ready for their afternoon
rehearsal at a local Salvation Army Hall. Unfortunately "They" forgot
about us even though it was booked only two days before so we had to put
plan B into operation and switch our rehearsal to the RAFA club next
door. Then the band got down to the serious business in hand.
Unfortunately lady luck was not on our side and we
lost by 1 point to Menai Bridge. After a good start by our two Solo
cornets the band started to get to grips with the piece. All Soloists
played well and the band came off stage satisfied with how the
performance had gone. Adjudicator David Hirst was extremely pleased at
the high standard achieved throughout the day.
